Ernie Presseau, director of the annual Chateauguay St. Patrick's Day parade, has been honoured with the 2012 Simon McDonough Humanitarian Award sponsored by the Montreal United Irish Societies.

The annual award highlights the outstanding commitment of members having distinguished themselves over time, promoting Irish heritage roots in Montreal and surrounding regions throughout the province.

The announcement was made at the UIS general meeting last Sunday at St. John Brébeuf Church hall.

Before taking on the task of organizing the St. Patrick's Day parade for the Chateauguay and Valley Irish Heritage Society several years ago, Presseau assisted in organizing the Montreal St. Patrick's Day parade and has been doing this sort of volunteer work for over 30 years.

"You are to be commended for a job well done and you have done the Irish proud," Presseau was congratulated by Bill Timmons of the United Irish Societies in an email.

Presseau was pleased to receive the award but he couldn't resist a humorous comment. "If I got paid for half the volunteer work I do, I'd be a rich man," he joked.

The presentation will take place at a date to be determined.
